O verdadeiro criador do ZERO foi Howard Hughes, com seu modelo Hughes H-1 Racer.

"Aviation historians have posited that the H-1 Racer may have inspired later radial engine fighters such as the P-47 Thunderbolt and the Focke-Wulf Fw 190. After the war, Hughes further claimed that "it was quite apparent to everyone that the Japanese Zero fighter had been copied from the Hughes H-1 Racer." He noted both the wing planform, the tail empennage design and the general similarity of the Zero and his racer. Jiro Horikoshi, designer of the Mitsubishi Zero strongly denied the allegation of the Hughes H-1 influencing the design of the Japanese fighter aircraft."

E no caso dele ter copiado, alguém acredita que ele assumiria assim, de cara limpa? Ainda mais sendo japones, que prefere a morte a assumir alguma picaretagem...

Assim como os boatos de que o Zero era uma copia do Vought V143 ou de projetos da Seversky, essa alegacao tambem nao tem nenhum fundamento.
O Zero eh uma evolucao natural das experiencias adquiridas com o A5M e eh resultado de um requerimento da Marinha que exigia desempenho superior a qualquer outro caca naval em operacao.

Uma coisa é se inspirar, outra é copiar:

Dai a falar que o Anequim é cópia de qualquer outro avião é muita maldade!
Tá claro que o Zero foi inspirado no H-1 e não copiado.

Concordo com vocês. O próprio Jiro Horikoshi também concorda. Em suas próprias palavras:

"the business of creating any new airplane is a process of adapting the existing art and science to the problem at hand. It is no exaggeration to say that we did not look upon the general design or basic configuration of foreign airplanes with any great respect. Any designer who fails, out of vanity, to accept the best techniques available to him, fails at his job."

E como ele mesmo admite, "the landing gear retraction mechanism on the Zero was inspired by the Vought 143 or a Northrop, and that the system of fastening engine cowls and inspections panels, and the method of mounting the engine were learned by my staff from other foreign planes. But as I remember, nothing else came directly from foreign planes so far as the design of the airframe proper was concerned."

Acrescento ainda que os Sakae 12/21 derivam dos Twin Wasp, o desenho das hélices é Hamilton Standard, os canhões licenciados da Oerlikon.....

Mas não vejo ligação com o Hughes. Até mesmo porque o Zero foi projetado com base em um requerimento da Marinha Imperial que, na época, muitos pensavam impossível de ser alcançado e que tinha como ênfase a MANOBRABILIDADE (e a autonomia), ou seja, o inverso da proposta do Hughes H-1.

Que eu conheça, o único projeto contemporâneo que se pode dizer que tenha certa semelhança quanto ao aspecto geral, é o Gloster F.5/34:
