O B-17 sempre foi reconhecido como uma aeronave que tomava um bocado de danos e ainda assim trazia seus tripulantes a salvo para casa.

Foram produzidos 12.732 B-17 entre 1935 e maio de 1945, das quais 4.735 foram perdidas em combate, um arrepiante 37% da frota.
