In the latest Model Graphix magazine, Mr. Kihachiro Ueda, Japanese model ship kits box painter and marine artist died on June 18, 2016. His age at death was 95-year-old.
He was born on August 20, 1920 in Shizuoka ken, Japan. He had been drawing on since prewar days. He joined the army in 1941, and he embarked to the transportation ship of the army as a soldier of the archibald in 1942.
While Pacific War, the transportation ship which he had taken was sunk six times. His last battle was transportation ship Kinka maru which had been sunk in the Manila bay in November, 1944. The president of the Tamiya (Mr. Syunsaku Tamiya) lived in the same town as him. In the 1960, He was not satisfied with the quality of the ship model's box-art. At that time, he knew that a good artist lived in the same town. So, Mr. Ueda began to draw the ship's model box-art.
He was able to draw the ship according to any angle if there was one drawing. He says that he learnt the picture by self-study. However, he experienced many ghastly sea battles, and there was an experienced soul in his picture.
